[Review] Operation Prom Date (Tactics in Dating, #1) - Cindi Madsen

Summary: Kate ships tons of fictional couples, but IRL her OTP is her and Mick, the hot quarterback she’s crushed on since, like, forever. With only one semester left of senior year, it’s now or never if she wants to land him in time for prom. Since she’s flirtationally challenged, she enlists Cooper Callihan, the guy who turned popular seemingly overnight but who used to be a good friend.

Cooper lives and breathes rowing, but his partner just broke his wrist. When he remembers Kate’s good with a set of oars, he strikes a deal: help him train, and he’ll make sure her crush notices her. Only he didn’t know how addicting spending time with her would be. Or how the more successful the Operation is, the more jealousy he experiences.

The mission has been set. The troops have their marching orders. But what if the target is the wrong guy all along?

Kissing practice has never been more fun.

I was so so so glad to be part of this blog tour, I half stalked checked the author online, which I almost never have time to do, and found her so nice I feared not enjoying this book enough.

In truth, I enjoyed a little too much.

Kate has crushed on Mick for long, and she dreams of being his pair to prom. Now her senior year is halfway done, she has finally found a partner to help her on Operation Prom Date. Cooper has the right tips to get her closer to success and he just needs someone to practice rowing while his friend recovers. except Kate might be perfect for him in other ways too.

I fell in love not only with both of the main characters but also with their chemistry together. The dialog exchange is hilarious, and they're simply that perfect for each other. I also liked how no one is already in love with the other, they really start the "operation" in a friendly way, no underlying intentions, so you get to presence their affection turn into something else. And the transformation was also well executed, especially on Kate's side, considering the author had to keep her interested in Mick for a while so the main plot didn't lose meaning too soon.

Even so, my only complaint about the book rests here. Once the two start falling for each other, the pace gets too slow. I felt the author attempts to being back rhythm but they fell through one after the other, in my opinion. With this, the book dragged a little during the last third.

Even if it lost points in rhythm, the book is filled with something elses to make it unique. Kate has this fangirl thing going on with which I could only relate, even if part of me wanted to roll my eyes when she started on her ships. I so could see myself alienating the hell out of anyone who would lend a ear to my fannish talks... And Cooper is a perfect book boyfriend, mainly with the being ripped part of course but also with how well he treats his conundrum on wanting to do what Kate wants even though it is exactly the opposite of what interests him. It's just so cute watching him anguish about it, I wanted to hug him all the time.

Summing up, this was an easy-read featuring a great couple and a very nice writing. It saved me from a succession of disappointments, really. I feel that if you are a fan of Kasie West's books, you may love this one as much as I did—unfortunately the feeling was the same I usually have reading her novels, to the loss in rhythm issue. Additionally, there are some topics that are great for a discussion. Mainly, being yourself versus becoming something else for a guy or for anything really was the key point in this plot, not only Kate faced the dilemma, Cooper also had to find an answer to this, as well as other characters in the story.

I'm very curious about the whole series, considering how interesting all the other characters were. I hope it won't be too long. I'm really glad I found this author!
